To be so distinguished, is an honour, which, being very little accustomed to be favors from the great, I know not well how to receive, or in what term to acknowledge.

We are now become so much Englishmen, Dutchmen, Spaniards or Germans, that we are no longer citizens of the world; so the much natives of one particular spot, or members of one pretty society , that we no longer consider ourselves as the general inhabitants of the globe, or members of that grand society which comperhends the whole human kind.

But if it were not, I must own, I should prefer the title of the ancient philosopher, viz, a citizen of the world, to that of an Englsihman, a Frechman, a European, or to any other appellation whatever.

　　本书共收散文30篇，力求有代表性，但考虑到实用意义，对19世纪和20世纪的散文有所侧重。
